In the Middle Ages, it was believed to reverse the damage of any poison. In Rome, it was used to cure stomach and throat ailments. Ancient sailors from across the world believed it protected them while they were on the water, both from the violence of the ocean itself and from the peril of the sirens’ call. Aquamarine, the “water of the ocean,” has been a beloved gemstone throughout time.

The modern day birthstone for those born in March, aquamarine is traditionally a lovely transparent to translucent blue-green. In truth, aquamarine is a beryl (closely related to emeralds) and comes in many colors. Pink aquamarine, also known as morganite, is particularly prized. With a sturdy Mohs harness of 8, it’s clear why creative gem designers so often choose aquamarine on which to perfect their daring new cuts and carvings.
