Garnet is the birth stone of January. The word garnet comes from the 14th‑century middle english word gernet, meaning "dark red." It is derived from the latin word ranatus, from granum meaning "grain" or "seed".
- History: Garnets were very popular in Europe in 18th and 19th centuries. They were frequently used for jewelry in the Victorian times. Garnet still remains a gift of love and is traditionally given for the 19th anniversary of marriage. It is used as a gift for two-year and six-year anniversaries.
