- What is it: Calcite is the one of the most common minerals and has a Mohs hardness of 3. It occurs in a great variety of shapes and colors, and it constitutes a major portion of many of the earth's rocks. Color is white or none, though shades of gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, or even black can occur when the mineral is charged with impurities.
- History: Powdered calcite is often used as a white pigment, some of the earliest paints were made with calcite. Ancient Egyptians carved many items out of calcite, relating it to their goddess Bast, which then contributed to the term alabaster.
- Metaphysical Properties: Calcite is a spiritual stone thatis believed to bring higher consciousness and psychic abilities. It helps mind and body to remember soul experiences. Calcite is said to intellectually connect with emotions.
