Crystal Quartz

Easily the most commonly used gemstone in beading, clear crystal quartz is the undisputed queen of beads. Also known as rock crystal, pure quartz is attractive, durable and quite inexpensive. Whether tumbled and smooth or faceted and sparkly, crystal quartz has the clarity and shimmer of water. In fact, Pliny the Elder thought crystal quartz was actually a form of ice. This is reflected in the origin of the word crystal, which is from the Greek word crystallos meaning ice. Ironically, the Irish word for quartz is grian cloch, which means stone of the sun.

Many people are unaware that quartz is actually a large family of gemstones, including amethyst, citrine, chalcedony, carnelian, aventurine and many more stones. Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s continental crust. It’s a form of silicon dioxide, and the different stones are a result in variation in impurities and crystallization. Quartz has a Moh’s hardness of 7, which is quite hard. The word quartz actually comes from a Slavic word for hard.

Quartz is very popular in jewelry, in part because of its use in healing. Crystal quartz is traditionally known for focusing and amplifying positive energy. It is said to harmonize and energize the body as well as enhance psychic abilities. Crystal quartz can be used to cleanse, align and activate the chakras.
