Studying Symbols: Hamsa
Studying Symbols: Hamsa
Hamsas have recently popped up in jewelry and clothing trends these past few years. This icon has a foothold in Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shamanism, Jain beliefs and in Anatolia. Hamsas are often worn by people who believe in a “Supreme Power” and find themselves at a cross-road in life.
In the middle of many hamsa hands, there is an image called the “evil eye.” There has been a fear of the evil eye since prehistoric times. It represents destructive energies and negative emotions, like hatred, jealousy, and envy. That is why the hamsa hand is a symbol that is believed to be an amulet of protection against evil since it holds the “evil eye,” warding off the destructive and negative energies and emotions.
At Bead World we supply many types of hamsa beads and amulets like the tiny hamsa charm above.
