- What is it: Quartz is a common variety of silicon dioxide that often crystallizes into well-formed hexagonal prisms. It occurs in many colors, including purple amethyst, yellow citrine, and smokey quartz. Colorless, transparent quartz with little to no impurities are refered to as "crystal quartz".
- History: Crystal Quartz are among the earliest of prized gemstones. Uses of crystal date back to as far as 75,000 BC. Every culture on the planet has attributed magical powers to quartz crystals, as they are commonly made into "Crystal Balls," which are used in fortune telling. The Japanese considered it "the perfect jewel", symbolizing patience, perseverance, and purity.
- Metaphysical Properties: There is believed to be emotional healing properties of crystal quartz that remove feelings of negativity while encouraging positive feelings and thoughts. - What is it: Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz (SiO2) where the violet color is caused by irradiation or impurities of iron which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions.
- History: The name comes from the Koine Greek ἀμέθυστος amethystos from ἀ- a-, "not" and μεθύσκω methysko / μεθύω methyo, "intoxicate", a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. In Greek mythology, amethyst was rock crystal dyed purple by the tears of Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry. Ancient Egyptians used the stone as the representative of the zodiac sign of the goat.
