- What is it: The mineral pyrite, also known as fool's gold, is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS2. Pyrite is considered the most common of the sulfide minerals. Pyrite's metallic luster and brass-like hue, give it a visual resemblance to gold, hence the nickname of "fool's gold".
- History: The name pyrite is derived from the greek word πυρίτης (pyritēs), "of fire" or "in fire." In ancient Rome, this name was applied to several types of stone that would create sparks when struck against steel. Pyrite was the popular choice in the 16th and 17th centuries as a source of ignition in early firearms, most notably the type of firearm known as the wheellock, where a sample of pyrite was placed against a circular file to strike the sparks needed to fire the gun.
- Metaphysical Properties: Pyrite is believed to be a very protective stone, shielding the user from negative energy of all kinds. It is said to carry Pyrite in your pocket to protect you from both environmental pollution and physical danger. Pyrite also promotes physical health and emotional well-being.
