- What is it: Obsidian is an igneous rock that forms when molten rock cools so rapidly that it is unable to form into a crystalline structure. The result is a volcanic glass with a smooth uniform texture that breaks with a conchoidal fracture.
- History: Obsidian has been used since ancient times and has written about as far back as two thousand years ago. It has been mined for jewelry and sculptures all over the world since then. Obsidian is found anywhere that has experienced volcanic eruption with rapid cooling. However, no snowflake obsidian has been found that dates before the Cretaceous period. It is believed that even primitive mankind may have used obsidian for jewelry, tools and weaponry such as arrowheads and knives.
- Metaphysical Properties: Obsidian is said to be a truth stone. Believed to be a strongly protective stone, it repels negativity. Obsidian removes mental stress and tension.
- Because gemstones are natural materials, appearances may vary from bead to bead
