- What is it: Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminium oxide which typically contains traces of iron, vanadium, titanium, and chromium. It is also a naturally transparent material but can have different colors and translucency depending on the type and amount of metallic impurities in the crystalline structure. Because of corundum's hardness, pure corundum has up to a 9.0 on the mohs scale it can scratch many other minerals. It is commonly used as an abrasive and is used in machining metals, plastics, and wood.
- History: In the mid-1800s, watch makers in Switzerland needed tiny bearings that were resistant to abrasion. They discovered that they could drill a hole into a tiny piece of corundum and use it as a bearing. The corundum was much harder than the metals used to make the moving parts of a watch, and it was able to stand up to the continuous abrasion without fail.
- Metaphysical Properties: Corundum is said to promote insight into the unknown, promoting wisdom and wise choices. It is also believed to lessen negative emotional by relieving tension, anger, and reducing negative thoughts.
- Because gemstones are natural materials, appearances may vary from bead to bead
