  • What is it: Aquamarine is a blue variety of beryl. It occurs in most sites which yield ordinary beryl. Well-known varieties of beryl are emeralds and aquamarine. Pure beryl is colorless, but it is frequently tinted by impurities, which range from green, blue, yellow, white, and red (the rarest).
  • Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz (SiO2) where the violet color is caused by irradiation or impurities of iron which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions.
  • Quartz is a common variety of silicon dioxide that often crystallizes into well-formed hexagonal prisms. It occurs in many colors, including purple amethyst, yellow citrine, and smokey quartz. Rose quartz is a very soft, cloudy pale pink color.
  • History: The name "Aquamarine" derives from the latin words aqua marina, meaning "sea water." The ancient Romans believed that aquamarine would protect against dangers while travelling at sea, while providing energy, and cure laziness.
  • The name comes from the Koine Greek ἀμέθυστος amethystos from ἀ- a-, "not" and μεθύσκω methysko / μεθύω methyo, "intoxicate", a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. In Greek mythology, amethyst was rock crystal dyed purple by the tears of Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry. Ancient Egyptians used the stone as the representative of the zodiac sign of the goat.
  • Rose quartz has been dated back to 7000 BC have been found in the area once known as Mesopotamia (today’s Iraq). Rose quartz jewelry was known to be crafted by the Assyrians around 800-600 BC. The Assyrians, along with the Romans, might have been the first to use this stone.
  • Metaphysical Properties: Aquamarine is believed to be a stone of courage and protection. Used often with the Throat Chakra, Aquamarine can be used to promote verbal self-expression. The metaphysical properties of Aquamarine make it an excellent stone for spiritual healing.
  • Amethyst is believed to be a very powerful and protective crystal, and is a first choice of many metaphysicians. Used in acient times to recover from both physical addictions as well as addictive relationships, it became known as the “Stone of Sobriety”. A natural stress reliever, Amethyst is said to encourage inner strength.
  • Rose Quartz is believed to have a soothing energy which fosters empathy, reconciliation, and forgiveness of others. Said to clear anger, jealousy, resentment, and allows healing of issues associated with holding on to such negative emotions.
