Description
- Approximate beads per strand: 28
- What is it: Onyx, as well as agate are both varieties of layered chalcedony that differ only in the form of the bands: agate has curved bands and onyx has parallel bands. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color. Commonly, onyx contain bands of black and/or white.
- History: Onyx comes from the Greek word ὄνυξ, meaning "claw" or "fingernail". Because, onyx with flesh-colored and white bands can sometimes resemble a fingernail. It has a long history of use for jewelry, where it is usually cut as a cabochon or into beads (hasn't changed much since!). Onyx was used in Egypt as early as the Second Dynasty to make bowls and other pottery items.
- Metaphysical Properties: Believed to be a powerful protection stone, Black Onyx absorbs and transforms negative energy, and helps to prevent the drain of personal energy. Black Onyx aids emotional and physical strength and stamina, especially during times of stress, confusion, or grief.
- Because gemstones are natural materials, appearances may vary from bead to bead
