Double Crimping Tutorial
Double Crimping Tutorial
Next up on our “back-to-the-basics” tutorial series is double crimping. Last month we covered flat crimping and now we’re going to step it up a notch. Flat crimping and double crimping are equally secure when done properly – the difference is really just the aesthetics. Double crimping essentially folds the crimp in half and makes a smaller finished crimp.
.
You will need:
Medium Soft Flex Beading Wire
2x2mm Crimps (2)
Clasp of Choice
.
1. Thread one 2×2 mm crimp onto your Soft Flex. Next, thread your Soft Flex through the opening of your clasp.
2. Thread the Soft Flex back through the crimp, making a loop that captures the clasp. Keep the wires parallel to each other inside the crimp. There must be enough slack in the loop that the clasp can move freely.
3. When you look at your crimping tool, you should see two sets of divots. The first set is shaped like a football, and the second is shaped like a curve. Place your crimp in the second set of divots (the curved ones).
4. Press the tool shut firmly, crimping your crimp into the shape of a curve.
5. Turn your crimp 90 degrees (1/4 turn) so that your smiley crimp looks like a moon shaped crimp. Place your crimp (in moon position) into the first set of divots (the football).
6. Press the tool shut firmly, and the moon should fold in on itself. It should look like a 1×2 mm rectangle when done properly.
Which crimp do you like better? Keep in mind that you can always use a crimp cover to hide your crimps if you don’t love the way either one looks. Continue practicing your crimping – next month we’ll put it to use to make a stylish bracelet.
Happy Beading!!
