Gemstone of the Month: Auralite 23

 I’m definitely a gemstone addict and I had heard about the amazingness that is Auralite 23 in some crystal and gemstone groups I’m in, but I had yet to see it in person. When we found Auralite 23 on our buying trip, my eyes lit up and I made sure it came home with us!

Although Auralite 23 is a relatively new gemstone for us (it’s only been available since about 2011), it is actually around 1.2-2.4 billion years old. It was formed during the Meso-proterozoic Era. The leading theory is that meteors hit the earth around that time and caused rare metallic ores to the surface, which then dissolved and became incorporated into an amethyst crystal. The combination of Amethyst and the other ores became what we now know as Auralite 23. Auralite 23 is only found in Canada, in a forest north of Lake Superior. It is mostly purple with a chevron pattern, but there is also gray, orange, red, clear, etc.

Auralite 23 is essentially Amethyst with inclusions (other minerals). The majority of Auralite 23 consists of Amethyst, Citrine, and a rare form of Green Quartz, but there are 23 other minerals that have been found in this gemstone’s matrix: Titanite, Cacoxenite, Lepidocrosite, Ajoite, Hematite, Magnetite, Pyrite, Goethite, Pyrolusite, Gold, Silver, Platinum, Nickel, Copper, Iron, Limonite, Sphalerite, Covellite, Chalcopyrite, Gialite, Epidote, Bornite, & Rutile. There are also 35 elements present in Auralite 23: Silver, Gold, Aluminum, Barium, Beryllium, Bismuth, Calcium, Cadmium, Cobalt, Chromium, Copper, Iron, Mercury, Potassium, Lanthanum, Magnesium, Manganese, Molybdenum, Sodium, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Lead, Palladium, Sulfur, Antimony, Scandium, Strontium, Thorium, Titanium, Thalium, Uranium, Vanadium, Tungsten, Zinc, and Zirconium. Is your head spinning yet? All of those extra minerals and elements add not just physical beauty with the varied appearance of Auralite 23 beads, but additional energetic properties as well. Each of those minerals has its own set of metaphysical properties and benefits that it brings to the Auralite 23 party. While there have been many different elements and minerals found in Auralite 23 overall, a single bead is only going to have a small number of inclusions (usually 2-7). For this reason, when picking out your Auralite 23 I suggest closely looking at each strand to decide which ones you are most drawn to, as each strand will have a different physical appearance and different energetic properties based on the inclusions in those beads.

The name Auralite 23 is a bit of a conundrum. Some people believe it is from the 23 additional elements found in the matrix of the stone. Others believe that it is from the number of chevrons on an entire growth of Auralite 23. Over the 1.2-2.4 billion years that Auralite 23 has been growing, it is believed that it stopped growing periodically and started growing again later. This causes the chevron pattern in the gemstone. Fans of the chevron theory believe that there are 23 chevrons in a complete piece of Auralite 23, signifying that there were 23 growing periods, hence the name Auralite 23.

The energetic properties of Auralite 23 have been described as being an intense amethyst, which makes sense since it is basically Amethyst with additional properties. It has become known as one of the master healers (both physically and metaphysically) in the gemstone world given the multitude of energetic properties from its inclusions. It has a high frequency and is great for those wanting to expand their spiritual connection, tap into metaphysical energies, or undergo a spiritual transformation. Auralite 23 boosts awareness and facilitates connection with your spirit guides/higher spirit/higher self. It aids in meditation, increases inner calm & focus, calms anger, encourages you to think peacefully before reacting, and awakens you to a new consciousness.

The combination of inclusions can be used for chakra balancing and whole body wellness, since the inclusions are associated with various chakras. Auralite 23 is believed to work exceptionally well with the crown chakra and the third eye chakra though.

Physically, Auralite 23 can reduce sleep disorders and help you relax into a deep sleep. It relaxes the body, removing stress, tension, headaches, eye strain, and muscle pains.
