Gemstone of the Month: Turquoise

Here in Arizona, no gemstone is a greater part of the collective culture than turquoise. We are blessed with two of the most highly prized mines in the world. Sleeping Beauty Mine in Globe and Kingman Mine outside Kingman produce startlingly bright blue turquoise, due to the region’s high copper content. In addition, our rich Native American history and active tribal communities mean that we are continually treated to the sight of beautifully crafted traditional turquoise jewelry. It’s no wonder that turquoise beads are a perennial best seller in our stores.

Arizona turquoise is a wonderful thing, but gorgeous turquoise can be found all over the world. Nevada and New Mexico are known for their mines, and Mexican Narcosari turquoise is quite valuable. China’s Hubei Mine is well known for producing lovely green and blue-green stones due to the area’s high iron content. Chinese turquoise is beautiful and quite inexpensive. Turquoise is a traditional gift, as it is said that wearing turquoise strengthens friendships. In addition, wearing turquoise has been used to alleviate depression, bring confidence and encourage creativity.
