- What is it: Carnelian is in the chalcedony family, sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between other chalcedony gemstones. Sard, which is a brown-red translucent form of Chalcedony, can also be used to identify the stone. It is commonly known that Carnelian is on the redder spectrum and Sard on the browner spectrum. Both varieties of the silica mineral are colored by iron oxide impurities.
- History: Carnelian has been used as beads and adornments since the 5th millennium BC. Primitive bow drills were used to drill holes in the gemstones to create the beads. Carnelian was widely used during Roman times to make seals for enclosing important documents as hot wax does not stick to carnelian.
- Metaphysical Properties: Carnelian is believed to be a stabilising stone by restoring vitality while stimulating creativity. Said to encourage positive life choices and success.
- Because gemstones are natural materials, appearances may vary from bead to bead.
