- What is it: Cat’s eye is a gemstone effect known as chatoyancy, where a band of light appears to glide across the surface of the stone, resembling the slit eye of a cat. While several minerals can display this effect, the most famous is chrysoberyl, often called “cymophane.” Cat’s eye chrysoberyl is typically honey-yellow to greenish in color, with the sharpest chatoyancy seen in well-polished cabochons. Other stones, such as quartz, tourmaline, and apatite, can also show a cat’s eye effect, though chrysoberyl remains the most prized.
- History: Cat’s eye has been treasured for centuries in various cultures. In India, it has long been considered a powerful talisman, often associated with the planet Ketu in Vedic astrology, symbolizing protection and spiritual insight. In Europe, cat’s eye gained popularity during the Victorian era, when its unusual light effect captivated jewelers and collectors. In Sri Lanka, one of the major sources of chrysoberyl cat’s eye, the stone has been revered for its protective qualities and was historically worn by royalty and nobility. Today, cat’s eye gemstones continue to be valued both for their rarity and their mesmerizing appearance, with Sri Lanka, Brazil, and East Africa producing some of the finest examples.
- Metaphysical Properties: Metaphysically, cat’s eye is believed to be a stone of protection, intuition, and clarity. Its shifting band of light is said to ward off negativity, guard against the “evil eye,” and help the wearer see truth in uncertain situations. Many consider it a grounding stone that balances emotions and sharpens awareness, making it especially useful in decision-making or periods of transition. Cat’s eye is also thought to stimulate intuition and strengthen spiritual vision, guiding one through challenges with courage and resilience.
