Black opal is considered to be the rarest, whereas white, gray, and green are the most common. Opal is the October birthstone.
- History: Opal was a rare and very valuable gemstone and was prized by European royalty. Until the discovery of vast deposits in Australia in the 19th century, the only known source was Cervencia in Slovakia. Austrailian opal now accounts foapproximately 80-95% of the world's supply.
