- What is it: Mother of pearl, also known as Nacre, is an organic and inorganic material produced by select mollusks as an inner shell layer, it also makes up the colorful, iridescent outer coating of pearls.
- History: Throughout history, some cultures placed very little value on pearls and instead placed value on the luminescent mother-of-pearl shells. Before the 19th century, Japanese shell divers would often toss pearls when found. It is said that Polynesian children used pearls as marbles. In the Americas, Abalone was eaten and the shell used as inlay on carved objects made of wood, ivory, and bone.

- History: Spiny oysters shells were carved and traded for at least 10,000 years. Natives of the now county of Columbia harvested these mollusks as a staple food source.
