Description
- Approximate beads per strand: 180
- What is it: Iolite is a transparent to translucent form of Cordierite and is a light to deep blue color, and usually includes a purplish tinge. Iolite is one of few gemstones that has pleochroism, which is an optical phenomenon where the mineral has different colors when observed at different angles. Similar to polarization.
- History: Iolite's name comes from the Greek word for violet. An older name for iolite is "dichroite," a Greek word meaning "two-colored rock", a reference to it's pleochroism. The vikings used this stone to determine the position of the sun on overcast days, this works by determining the direction of polarization of the sky overhead.
- Metaphysical Properties: Iolite is said to be a vision stone. Clearing thoughts while opening intuition. Iolite is believed to aid in understanding by helping you to express your true self, free from the expectations of others.
- Because gemstones are natural materials, appearances may vary from bead to bead
