- What is it: Peridot is a gemstone quality olivine. Peridot is the most well-known gem variety of the silicate mineral called Olivine. Peridot is one of the few gemstones to be found in a single color, while other stones can be found in a variety of colors (Tourmaline, for example comes in all shades of color). Most gemstones are formed in the Earth’s crust. However, peridot is formed in the Earth’s mantle, which is much deeper. The only other known gemstone that forms in the mantle are diamonds.
- History: Peridot jewelry dates back as far as 2,000 BC. Peridot has always been associated with light. In fact, the Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun.” The most abundant peridot deposit in the world is located on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona. Roughly, 80 to 95% of the world’s peridot supply is found here.
- Metaphysical Properties: Peridot is the August birthstone. This gemstone is believed to have many “powers.” Known for attracting love and peace, peridot is also believed to help one achieve a good night’s sleep.
- Because gemstones are natural materials, appearances may vary from bead to bead
