- What is it: Conch or Strombus gigas describes both the large, mollusk and its shell. Conch meat is consumed throughout the Caribbean and is considered a delicacy. A conch can reach up to 12 inches in length and can live for up to 40 years. Its shell grows as the mollusk grows, forming into a spiral shape with a pinky-orange, shiny interior.
- History: The Aztec began many ceremony by blowing a trumpet, this trumpet was just a conch shell, with its chambers inside the shell creating noise. The conch has become a symbol of the relaxing life in the Florida Keys, where natives proudly refer to themselves as "conchs."
