  • Approximate beads per strand: 65
  • What is it: Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica; its water content ranges from 3-21% by weight, but is usually between 6-10%. Depending on formation conditions, opal may be transparent, translucent, or opaque while it's color may be white, black, or nearly any color. Black opal is considered to be the rarest, whereas white, gray, and green are the most common. Opal is the October birthstone.
  • History: Opal was a rare and very valuable gemstone and was prized by European royalty. Until the discovery of vast deposits in Australia in the 19th century, the only known source was Cervencia in Slovakia. Austrailian opal now accounts for approximately 80-95% of the world's supply.
  • Metaphysical Properties: Opal is believed to encourage both freedom and independence. Opal stimulates originality and creativity. It helps to release anger while aiding in expressing one's true self.
