  • What is it: Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica; its water content ranges from 3-21% by weight, but is usually between 6-10%. Depending on formation conditions, opal may be transparent, translucent, or opaque while it's color may be white, black, or nearly any color. Black opal is considered to be the rarest, whereas white, gray, and green are the most common. Opal is the October birthstone.
