Bead Mat

Instructions on Construction:

1. Place your button on the 3 feet of leather, halfway down. Hold the leather under the button with your left thumb and finger.

2.Place your button on the 3 feet of leather, halfway down. Hold the leather under the button with your left thumb and finger. Flip the same strand of leather over the top of the center strand. Again, hold it where it crosses under the button.

3. Next, take the left strand of leather and place it over the strand going out to the right. Then take the same strand under and pass through the loop to the left, towards you.

4.Pull until you have formed two 1-inch loops that look like a pretzel. Still holding under the button pull each strand (left, then right) gradually reducing the size of the loops. The knot should be located ¼ inch down from the button.

5.When the loops get to ¼ inch in size, pull on both strands at the same time. Push up on knot with right finger and thumb. To make the knot tight, turn button to face you. Pull down on the knot towards you. At the same time, pull the two strands away from you. Do not pull too hard – you don’t want the leather to break! Just push and pull until it’s lightly in place.

6. Repeat steps 2-5 to create a second knot.

You can follow a more in-depth tutorial of the Spanish knot here

7. Thread on a large hole pearl to the right (top) cord of leather

8. Slide one closed oval jump ring over both strands of leather (it helps to pre close all of your oval jump rings before continuing)

9. Slide on a large hole pearl on the left (bottom) cord of leather, then a closed oval jump ring over both cords, then a large hole pearl on the right (top) cord of leather. Followed by two knots (repeat steps 2-5)

10. String on three 4mm gold beads onto the right (top) cord

11. Wire wrap a pearl charm using a ball end headpin and a pearl rice bead. Make sure the loop is large enough for the leather cord to pass through.

12. Replace the jump ring on the star charm with a 4mm 21 gauge jump ring, close it, and thread it onto the cord shown.

13. Tie two Spanish knots

14. Thread a large hole pearl on the left (bottom) cord, then an oval jump ring over both cords, then a large hole pearl on the right (top) cord, then an oval jump ring over both cords, then a large hole pearl on the left (bottom) cord. Followed by two Spanish knots

15. Repeat steps 10-13 but add a saguaro cactus charm

16. Repeat step 14

17. Repeat steps 10-13 but add a boot charm

19. Repeat step 14

20. Leave a little over 1/2 inch space and tie two more Spanish knots. This is the loop your button will go through to keep the bracelet closed

21. Glue both knots well and leave to dry

22. Cut the excess leather, leaving a few millimeters of cord. This helps the leather from coming undone over time

23. Done!
