- What is it: Topaz in its natural state is a golden brown to yellow and can often be mistaken as citrine, a less valuable gemstone. The density of topaz however, is heavier than citrine (about 25% more) and this difference in weight can be easily used to distinguish two stones of equal size. A variety of impurities, treatments, and techniques can make topaz other colors such as blue, red, grey, orange, green, pink, and more.
- History: The name "topaz" is derived from Old French Topace, Latin Topazus, Greek Τοpáziοs or Τοpáziοn, and Early Egyptian Topapwene meaning "land of the Topaz". Alternatively, the word topaz may also be related to the Sanskrit word tapas, meaning "heat" or "fire". In the middle ages, all yellow gemstones were refered to as Topaz and were believed to protect the owner from curses. An English myth claimed that Topaz cured lunacy and enhance mental powers.
- Metaphysical Properties: Topaz is said to stimulate, recharge, and motivate the the body by directing energy to where it is needed most. Believed to bring joy, abundance, and to enhance one's spiritual potential.
- Because gemstones are natural materials, appearances may vary from bead to bead.
