- What is it: Rhyolite is a form of igneous rock with a very high silica content. Rhyolite usually forms in continental or continent-margin volcanic eruptions where granitic magma (molten rock that is made up of crystals of various sizes and composition, produced from the melting of the Earth's mantle and crust) reaches the surface. Rhyolite is rarely produced from oceanic eruptions.
- History: Eruptions of granitic magma are rare. Since 1900, only three are known to have occurred. These were at St. Andrew Strait Volcano in Papua New Guinea (1955), Novarupta in Alaska (1912), and Chaiten in Chile (2008). Rhyolite was often used to make stone tools and weapons, such as arrowheads and axe heads, when more suitable materials were scarce.
- Metaphysical Properties: Rhyolite is stone that is thought to promote calmness during change and progress. Rhyolite is believed to assist in achieving one's goals, while also strengthening the soul, body and mind.
- Because gemstones are natural materials, appearances may vary from bead to bead
